Bharat Bandh Today (July 9): Over 25 Crore Workers on Nationwide Strike — Will Banks, Schools, and Colleges Remain Open?

...

A nationwide Bharat Bandh called by a coalition of central trade unions is set to disrupt services across the country today, with over 25 crore workers from various sectors — including banking, insurance, postal, construction, and power — participating in the strike.

The bandh, which is a protest against what unions call the government's “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate policies,” may significantly impact essential services, although no official public holiday has been declared.

Why is the Bharat Bandh Taking Place?

The strike has been organized by a forum of 10 central trade unions along with their affiliated federations and associations. According to their joint statement, the bandh is a response to:

  • The government’s non-conduct of the Indian Labour Conference for the past 10 years.

  • Attempts to enforce the four labour codes, which unions claim weaken collective bargaining rights.

  • Continued privatization, outsourcing, and contractual employment practices across public services.

  • Policy decisions that “favor corporates over workers and farmers,” thereby undermining India’s welfare state model.

Last year, the unions had submitted a 17-point demand charter to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, but claim that their grievances remain unaddressed.

What Services Will Be Affected?

  • Banking & Insurance: The All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and affiliated groups such as the Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association have confirmed participation. Expect delays in banking operations and customer services today.

  • Power Supply: Over 27 lakh power sector employees are also joining the strike, which may cause localized disruptions in electricity services.

  • Postal & Transport Services: Postal services and state-run transport in various states are expected to be affected.

  • Coal Mining, Factories & Construction: Workers from these sectors are also set to participate in the strike.

Are Schools, Colleges, and Banks Open Today?

  • Banks: No official bank holiday has been declared. However, widespread participation in the strike may lead to partial or full disruption of services, including cash deposit, withdrawal, and loan processing.

  • Schools & Colleges: As of now, no state has announced a holiday for educational institutions. Schools and colleges are expected to remain open, but attendance could be impacted in some regions.

  • Government Offices: Government offices are scheduled to remain open, though services may be slowed if employee participation in the strike is high.

Protest Highlights

Amarjeet Kaur from the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) stated, “Over 25 crore workers are expected to take part. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protests across the country.”

The union forum has urged workers and the public to make the strike a “grand success,” signaling that this protest is intended to send a strong message to the Centre regarding workers' and farmers' rights.
